Backend Engineer
Job Description
About Wealthfront Engineering
Wealthfronts culture centers around continuous learning, innovation, and quality-driven software development. With high quality software as our engineering objective, our key tactic is automation: building and operating in production, automating tests, observability, and development processes to minimize toil.
If you are drawn to being an engineer within such an environment and having outsized impact at a company of our size (~250 employees, half in engineering), we want to hear from you!
About the Role- We are looking for backend engineers to join core product development teams. Youll design and build new features or enhance existing features that support Wealthfronts products, with automated instrumentation and monitoring to require minimal operational maintenance.
- Youll improve maintainability and stability by fixing issues and adding enhancements to existing backend systems. Youll ensure mission-critical systems operate smoothly in production by triaging and resolving operational issues as part of a team of on-call engineers. Youll proactively identify opportunities to improve reliability and scalability.
- You might participate in recruiting activities such as interviewing and attending career fairs and provide mentorship to other engineers on the team.
- 2-6 years of experience developing backend components, services, or APIs in Java or a similar language. Knowledge of distributed systems and functional programming paradigms. Knowledge of SQL and experience with online data stores (e.g., MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MS SQL Server; NoSQL is acceptable).
- Passion for agile, test-driven development, continuous integration, and automated testing. Interest in platforms and backend systems with measurable business impact and working in a fast-paced cross-functional environment.
- Nice-to-have: Spark pipelines, ORM technologies (e.g., Hibernate), and dependency injection frameworks (Guice, Spring, Pico, Dagger).
- Bachelors or Masters in computer science or a related field.
- Mentor assignment and a structured onboarding program
- Opportunities to work on projects aligned with your professional goals
- Regular feedback via weekly 1:1s and semi-annual reviews
- Autonomy to thrive as a member of the team
Estimated annual salary range: $140,000 - $185,000 USD plus equity and a discretionary bonus.
Benefits include medical, vision, dental, 401K plan, generous time off, parental leave, wellness reimbursements, professional development, employee investing discount, and more.
