Job Description

Our client is seeking a highly accomplished Senior Metallurgical Engineer to join their advanced materials division in **Baltimore, Maryland, US**. This role is critical for driving innovation in the development, processing, and application of metallic materials. You will lead research initiatives, conduct material characterization, develop new alloys, and troubleshoot complex manufacturing issues. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of materials science principles, extensive experience with various metals and alloys, and expertise in analytical techniques and failure analysis.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead research and development projects focused on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel metallic materials and alloys.
  • Investigate and resolve complex metallurgical issues related to material performance, processing, and manufacturing.
  • Conduct comprehensive material characterization using techniques such as microscopy (SEM, TEM), spectroscopy (EDS, WDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mechanical testing.
  • Develop and optimize heat treatment processes, forging, casting, and other metalworking techniques.
  • Perform failure analysis on metallic components to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, design, and manufacturing teams to ensure material selection meets performance, cost, and production requirements.
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures for raw materials and finished products.
  • Write detailed technical reports, research papers, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in metallurgy, materials science, and related technologies.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance and support.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental policies.
  • Manage laboratory resources and equipment, ensuring proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Contribute to patent applications and intellectual property development.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in metallurgy and materials science.
  • Extensive knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, their properties, and processing methods.
  • Expertise in a wide range of material characterization techniques and analytical instrumentation.
  • Proven experience in failure analysis and root cause investigation.
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, phase transformations, and mechanical behavior of materials.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information effectively.
  • Experience with computational materials science tools is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research and development environment.
  • Project management skills and experience leading technical projects.
