Description:

We are a privately held multi-family real estate development and property management company with over 10,000 units under management and development across multiple states. We specialize in acquisition, development, construction, leasing and long-term asset management. We are seeking a controller to lead our accounting operations and support executive leadership with accurate and timely financial insights.


The controller will oversee all accounting functions for a multi-entity real estate portfolio, including financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and oversight of accounts payable and accounts receivable. This role is ideal for a proactive, detail-oriented leader who is passionate about real estate and property management.

This role will report directly to executive leadership and manage a small accounting team.

Requirements:

Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities.

Oversee general ledger activity, journal entries, and account reconciliations.

Manage multi-entity and consolidated financial reporting.

Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.


Real Estate Accounting

Review and approve operating expense calculations.

Monitor rent rolls for accuracy.

Coordinate with property managers and asset managers on budget-to-actual performance.


Budgeting & Forecasting

Lead the annual budgeting process across the entire portfolio.

Build forecasting models for cash flow, capital expenditures, and portfolio performance.

Assist leadership with long-range planning, financial scenarios, and lender reporting packages.


Cash Management

Manage day-to-day cash flow, banking relationships, and treasury functions.

Oversee and support accounts payable team, ensuring timely and accurate vendor payments, vendor compliance, and support property managers and asset managers develop and grow vendor relationships.

Oversee and support accounts receivable team, ensuring timely and complete resident payments, monitor tenant receivables, collections, and lease compliance billing.


Team Leadership & Systems

Supervise accounting staff; provide coaching, training, and workflow oversight.

Oversee and improve internal controls, processes, and financial procedures.


Audit, Tax & Compliance

Manage multiple property-level annual audits with external CPA firms HUD / REAC experience a plus.

Assist and manage portfolio-wide annual tax return preparation with external CPA firms LIHTC experience a plus.

Prepare lender compliance packages, financial covenants, and reporting.

Maintain compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.


Qualifications

Bachelors degree in accounting or finance required

5-8+ years of progressive accounting experience

Real estate accounting experience required residential preferred.

Strong understanding of cash-basis and GAAP reporting.

Experience with Yardi or similar property management software

Strong leadership skills with prior supervisory experience.

Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
