Job Description

Duties
1. Manage and direct all accounting and finance related operations of the University, ensuring the accurate and timely processing of all accounting transactions and records. 2. Supervise accounting and finance personnel including routinely meeting with staff to foster teamwork, timely communications, and collaboration; scheduling of projects; setting goals and conducting performance reviews; and providing guidance and training as appropriate. 3. Develop, implement, maintain and update as needed accounting and finance related policies and procedures with an emphasis on enhancing support for University operations and overall effectiveness of the team. 4. Lead the timely and accurate preparation and submission of the annual audited financial statements, federal awards audit statement, and retirement plan audit statement and serve as the principle liaison with the independent outside auditing firm. 5. Lead the timely and accurate preparation and submission of the IRS Form 990 and other required reports for governmental agencies and accrediting organizations, ensuring compliance with all relevant reporting requirements. 6. Develop, implement, and effectively maintain internal controls so as to safeguard University assets and the integrity of its accounting systems and to remain in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and governmental regulations. 7. Coordinate departmental testing of software and data management system upgrades and enhancements to validate that systems are functioning properly. 8. Assist the Vice President in overseeing the preparation of the annual operating budget. 9. Develop and oversee operating budgets for the business and finance department, utilities operations, and employee benefit programs. 10. Work closely with the University Advancement staff in support of fundraising efforts, documenting of gifts, and monitoring the use of gifts in accordance with any donor or grant restrictions. 11. Assure that customer service provided by the accounting and finance team staff is of the highest quality. 12. Maintain and update as appropriate the University’s chart of accounts and related recordkeeping structures. 13. Oversee the periodic monitoring, analysis, and reporting of operating budgets, forecasts, and variances. 14. Oversee all accounting and finance activities relative to any external financing arrangements, including tax exempt bond issues. 15. Plan and implement cross training and professional development of the staff in the accounting and finance areas. 16. Provide training and guidance on the use of accounting systems for staff in other departments across the campus as appropriate and needed. 17. Maintain CPA licensure and update knowledge and skills through appropriate professional development and training opportunities. 18. Serve on University committees and task forces as needed or appropriate, including serving in an ex officio role on the Retirement Plan Oversight Committee. 19. Review and approve travel reimbursements and purchasing card transactions for those serving on the President’s Cabinet, excluding the Vice President for Administration & Finance for whom the Provost reviews and approves. 20. Provide the Vice President for Administration & Finance with technical assistance and analysis as needed. 21. Support the work of the Vice President for Administration & Finance and serve as his/her principle advisor on maintaining the financial health of the University. 22. Communicate and collaborate effectively with other University department heads and liaisons with outside organizations, including banks and other financial institutions. 23. Serve as staff to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees. 24. Serve as the principal lead for Administration & Finance area for working with various departments on multifaceted projects requiring financial analysis and creative problem solving, including but not limited to financial aid discounting, cybersecurity, and food service interface with residential life software. 25. Assist the Vice President in representing the University with MICU regarding matters such as, financial operations, risk management, workers compensation, and cyber security. 26. Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Administration & Finance.

Preferred Qualifications
1. Licensure as CPA or MBA strongly preferred; 2. Management/supervisory experience at a private not-for-profit college or university strongly preferred; 3. Experience using Banner/Ellucian data base management system preferred; 4. Experience in the preparation of IRS Form 990 for not-for-profit organization strongly preferred; 5. Experience in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting for government, corporate, and foundation grants preferred;
