Overview
This role leads control systems design and execution for complex industrial energy and process projects. You'll own the full controls scope from early design through commissioning, working across engineering, field operations, and project teams to deliver reliable, high performance systems.
This is a hands on, senior position for someone comfortable making technical decisions, setting standards, and stepping into challenging field environments to troubleshoot and optimize live systems.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Ownership
- Lead development and review of control system deliverables including PFDs, P&IDs, control narratives, I/O lists, and electrical drawings
- Define control strategies, system architecture, and instrumentation selection for automated process systems
- Establish and maintain engineering standards across controls and instrumentation
PLC, SCADA, and Integration
- Architect and program PLC and SCADA systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability
- Oversee integration across field devices, networks, and control platforms (Modbus, HART)
- Drive loop tuning, system performance improvements, and operational stability
Project Execution & Technical Leadership
- Partner with project engineering and operations teams to ensure alignment from design through startup
- Lead controls scope during commissioning, startup, and performance validation
- Support HAZOP reviews, contractor coordination, and technical responses during execution
Field Support & Optimization
- Troubleshoot complex system issues remotely and on site
- Perform root cause analysis and implement long term fixes, not just immediate solutions
- Identify and drive process optimization opportunities across operating assets
Continuous Improvement
- Improve controls standards, documentation quality, and system consistency across projects
- Contribute to long term system design decisions and technology selection
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
- Typically 8+ years in industrial controls, process automation, or similar environments
- Deep experience with PLC programming (Rockwell preferred) and SCADA systems
- Strong understanding of instrumentation, process control, and industrial communication protocols
- Proven ability to lead design decisions and own technical deliverables
- Experience working in operating industrial facilities, not just design environments
- Solid working knowledge of ISA, NFPA, UL, and applicable safety standards
Preferred Experience
- Background in energy, gas processing, biogas, or industrial process systems
- Experience with Ignition or similar SCADA platforms
- Exposure to UL panel design and system integration
- Strong troubleshooting, RCA, and system optimization track record
