Job Description

A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a healthcare professional who performs routine laboratory tests and analyses on patient samples, such as blood, urine, and tissue, to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of various medical conditions. MLTs work under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or laboratory manager, following established protocols and ensuring the accuracy and quality of test results.

\n\nKey Responsibilities:\n\n\n

Sample Collection and Preparation:

\n\nCollect, label, and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples.\nEnsure proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens to avoid contamination or degradation.\nPrepare samples for analysis, including centrifugation, preparing slides for microscopy, and separating serum or plasma as required.\n\n\n\n

Performing Laboratory Tests:

\n\nConduct routine laboratory tests in hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and urinalysis, among others.\nOperate laboratory instruments and equipment, including microscopes, analyzers, and automated machines, to perform tests.\nAnalyze test results, compare them with normal ranges, and document findings accurately.\nFollow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for each test to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.\n\n\n\n

Quality Control and Assurance:

\n\nPerform routine quality control (QC) checks on laboratory equipment, reagents, and test results to ensure accuracy.\nTroubleshoot and address any issues or discrepancies in test results or equipment.\nDocument quality control results and make adjustments as necessary to maintain accuracy in testing.\n\n\n\n

Data Entry and Documentation:

\n\nEnter and maintain accurate test results in the laboratory information system (LIS) or patient medical records.\nMaintain detailed records of tests, results, and patient information in compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.\nEnsure proper documentation for all laboratory procedures, including patient results, quality control checks, and equipment maintenance.\n\n\n\n

Laboratory Equipment Maintenance:

\n\nCalibrate, maintain, and clean laboratory equipment to ensure it is functioning properly.\nIdentify and report equipment malfunctions to supervisors or the biomedical engineering team for repairs.\nMaintain inventories of reagents, supplies, and equipment, and ensure that they are well-stocked and ready for use.\n\n\n\n

Collaboration and Communication:

\n\nCollaborate with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the appropriate handling of patient samples and the timely delivery of results.\nCommunicate abnormal test results to the appropriate clinical staff and assist in the interpretation of the results.\nParticipate in team meetings to discuss lab performance, new procedures, and improvements.\n\n\n\n

Compliance and Safety:

\n\nAdhere to all regulatory and safety guidelines, including those set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and HIPAA.\nEnsure proper disposal of hazardous materials and maintain a safe and sterile laboratory environment.\nFollow infection control protocols to prevent contamination and ensure patient and staff safety.\n\n\n\n

Patient Interaction (if applicable):

\n\nIn some settings, MLTs may interact with patients to collect specimens or explain certain procedures related to testing.\nProvide patient education regarding specimen collection instructions or other necessary details to ensure accurate results.\n\n\n\n

\n\nStay current with advances in laboratory technologies, procedures, and best practices through continuing education.\nParticipate in training, workshops, and certifications to enhance skills and maintain licensure.\n\n\n
