Control Panel Wireman/Installer

Summary
We are seeking an experienced and driven Control Panel Wireman/Installer to support our cutting-edge automation solutions. This role requires a deep understanding of mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, automation technologies, and communication skills. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of supporting control and panel builds, assisting with start-up and commissioning, troubleshooting, working in diverse teams, and supporting PSI customers.
Responsibilities:
- Interpreting Schematics: Reading and understanding complex electrical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOM) to ensure accurate assembly.
- Mechanical Layout & Assembly: * Measuring and marking metal backplates for component placement.
- Drilling, tapping, and cutting to securely mount hardware like DIN rails and wireways.
- Physically installing heavy or delicate components such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), relays, motor starters, transformers, and terminal blocks.
- Wiring & Termination:
- Routing wire cleanly and logically through ducts to prevent electrical interference and maintain a neat, professional appearance.
- Cutting, stripping, crimping, and occasionally soldering wires.
- Applying correct ferrules, lugs, and detailed wire labels so the panel can be easily troubleshot by maintenance teams in the future.
- Quality Control & Testing:
- Performing "point-to-point" continuity checks using a multimeter to verify every single connection matches the schematic perfectly.
- Assisting with initial power-up and functional testing to ensure the panel operates safely and correctly before it leaves the shop floor.
- On-Site Installation (Installer Role): Depending on the specific job, they may travel to a client's facility to mount the completed panel, connect the external "field wiring" from the machinery back to the panel, and assist with system commissioning.
Essential Tools of the Trade
- Hand Tools: Wire strippers, ratcheting crimpers, insulated torque screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, and precision cutters.
- Power Tools: Drills, knock-out punches, and tap sets for metal panel modification.
- Diagnostic Equipment: Digital multimeters for voltage and continuity testing.
Key Skills Required
- Extreme Attention to Detail: A single misplaced wire, loose terminal, or mislabeled connection can cause severe equipment damage, system downtime, or safety hazards.
- Spatial Awareness: Organizing a densely packed panel so that it remains serviceable, well-ventilated (to prevent overheating), and aesthetically pristine.
- Code Compliance: Working knowledge of industrial electrical standards (such as UL 508A in the United States or IEC standards globally) that govern safe panel construction.
Qualifications:
• Demonstrates a strong safety commitment
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in an instrumentation, electrical or controls position in manufacturing.
• Familiarity with PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Omron), HMI development, and process control systems.
• Strong understanding of hydraulics, fixture design, structural design, and motion control.
• Proficiency in understanding and implementing industrial communication networks, including Ethernet.
• Experience with automation components such as sensors, actuators, robots, and vision systems.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills
.• Experience interacting with clients and sales teams.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Accredited training with an Associate’s degree in instrumentation or electrical technology preferred.
· An electrical journeyman’s license is preferred, or the knowledge and skills to be considered electrically qualified according to NFPA 70e.
· A strong proficiency with computers, including MS Office applications
• Experience with robotics and vision systems is a plus.
Other Responsibilities Include:
· On-site work in our Jesup, Iowa, facility with occasional (expenses compensated) work in our Rockford, Illinois, facility.
