Remote Mine Safety and Environmental Compliance Officer

Our client, a global leader in the mining industry with significant operations including those in the vicinity of Seattle, Washington, US , is seeking a dedicated and expert Mine Safety and Environmental Compliance Officer. This is a fully remote position, ideal for a seasoned professional looking to contribute to responsible mining practices from anywhere in the United States. The role is critical in ensuring that all mining operations adhere to the strictest safety regulations and environmental standards. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring comprehensive safety protocols, conducting regular audits, investigating incidents, and ensuring full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing mine safety and environmental protection. The successful candidate will possess a deep understanding of mining operations, MSHA and EPA regulations, and a proactive approach to risk management.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive mine safety and health programs in accordance with MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations (e.g., EPA standards, Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act).
  • Conduct regular site safety inspections and environmental audits of mining operations to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
  • Investigate all accidents, injuries, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for all mine personnel, ensuring understanding and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Prepare and submit all required regulatory reports to MSHA, EPA, and other relevant agencies.
  • Liaise with regulatory agency inspectors during site visits and inspections.
  • Maintain all safety and environmental documentation, records, and permits.
  • Develop and manage emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization, encouraging employee participation and feedback.
  • Advise management on best practices in mine safety, health, and environmental management.
  • Stay current with changes in legislation, regulations, and industry best practices related to mining safety and environmental compliance.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring programs, including air, water, and waste management.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in mine safety, health, and environmental compliance, preferably with a focus on surface or underground mining operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of MSHA and EPA regulations applicable to the mining industry.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing safety programs and conducting audits.
  • Strong understanding of risk assessment and incident investigation methodologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency in using safety management software and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and travel occasionally for site assessments or specific project needs, despite the remote nature of the role.
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills to promote safety culture.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Mine Safety Professional) are highly desirable.
  • Commitment to ethical practices and responsible resource extraction.
