Lead Chemical Process Safety Engineer - Remote
Job Description
Our client is seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Lead Chemical Process Safety Engineer to join their globally distributed team, operating in a remote-first capacity. This role is critical for ensuring the highest standards of safety across all chemical operations and process development initiatives. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive process safety management (PSM) programs, conducting rigorous risk assessments, and fostering a strong safety culture from anywhere in the world.

- Develop, implement, and maintain robust Process Safety Management (PSM) systems in alignment with OSHA, EPA, and industry best practices (e.g., CCPS guidelines).
- Conduct comprehensive Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) using methodologies such as HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA, and What-If analysis for new and existing processes.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses (RCAs), and develop corrective action plans to prevent recurrence.
- Develop and review safety procedures, operating manuals, and emergency response plans.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance on process safety engineering principles to project teams, engineers, and operators.
- Perform Management of Change (MOC) reviews to ensure safety implications are thoroughly assessed before implementation.
- Develop and deliver training programs on process safety topics to employees at all levels.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
- Stay updated on the latest regulations, standards, and technologies in process safety engineering.
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for process safety performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, operations, and EHS, to integrate safety into all project phases.
- Champion a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
- Advise on the safe design of new chemical processes and modifications to existing ones.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations on process safety risks and mitigation strategies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in chemical process engineering with a strong emphasis on process safety.
- In-depth knowledge and practical experience with PSM elements (e.g., PHA, MOC, Mechanical Integrity, Emergency Planning).
- Proven experience leading PHAs and incident investigations.
- Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and risk assessment skills.
- Strong communication, leadership, and influencing abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent certification is highly desirable.
- Experience with safety software and modeling tools is beneficial.
