Our client is seeking an experienced and strategic Remote Insurance Underwriting Manager to lead their underwriting team. This is a fully remote position that requires a deep understanding of insurance principles, risk assessment, and team leadership. You will be responsible for developing and implementing underwriting guidelines, overseeing the risk evaluation process for complex accounts, and ensuring profitable growth for the company. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial or personal lines underwriting, with demonstrated success in managing underwriting operations and mentoring underwriting staff. Your role will involve setting performance standards, monitoring underwriting quality, and collaborating with actuaries, claims departments, and sales teams to achieve business objectives. This position demands exceptional analytical skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to manage a remote workforce effectively. You will play a crucial role in shaping the company's risk appetite and underwriting philosophy. Responsibilities include:
- Develop, implement, and maintain robust underwriting policies and procedures to ensure consistent and accurate risk assessment.
- Lead, manage, and mentor a remote team of insurance underwriters, fostering a high-performance culture and driving professional development.
- Oversee the underwriting process for complex and large-risk accounts, ensuring appropriate pricing and terms.
- Monitor underwriting performance, key performance indicators (KPIs), and profitability metrics, taking corrective actions as needed.
- Collaborate with actuaries to review rate adequacy and risk models.
- Work closely with the claims department to share insights on risk trends and loss experience.
- Partner with the sales and marketing teams to support business development initiatives and provide underwriting expertise.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant insurance regulations and company guidelines.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, market conditions, and emerging risks that may impact underwriting operations.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback to underwriting staff.
- Develop and deliver training programs for underwriters on new products, guidelines, and best practices.
- Contribute to the development of new insurance products and services.
- Manage vendor relationships and external partnerships as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field. Advanced degree or relevant professional designations (e.g., CPCU, AU) are highly desirable.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in insurance underwriting, with at least 3-5 years in a management or leadership role.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing underwriting strategies and guidelines.
- Strong understanding of risk management principles and financial analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to manage remote teams and operations effectively.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in underwriting software, CRM systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of relevant insurance laws and regulations.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a remote setting.
